The Miss Wakulla County Scholarship Pageant has long been a cherished tradition in Wakulla County, rooted in the community’s vibrant local culture and festivals. Its origins trace back to the Miss Blue Crab title, which was historically associated with the Panacea Blue Crab Festival, a beloved county event celebrating the region’s seafood heritage that began in the mid-1970s to honor Wakulla’s blue crab industry. The festival has been a fixture of community life since around 1975, complete with parades, music, and coastal festivities, and the Miss Blue Crab title was originally crowned as part of those celebrations.
In 1976, the pageant transitioned from the Miss Blue Crab title into what is now known as the Miss Wakulla County Scholarship Pageant, expanding its focus to include scholarship opportunities and broader recognition of leadership, academic achievement, and community involvement among young women in the county. Since that time, the pageant has evolved into a standalone event that not only crowns local queens but also awards scholarships and emphasizes personal development, confidence, and service to the community—a legacy that continues to grow each year.
Today, the Miss Wakulla County Scholarship Pageant stands as a symbol of tradition and aspiration in Wakulla County. While still connected to local celebrations like the Blue Crab Festival through community appearances and shared heritage, the pageant has developed its own identity focused on empowering contestants through education, leadership, and public service. Its history reflects both the coastal culture of Wakulla and the county’s commitment to supporting young women in achieving their goals.
